What is the meaning of "ero" in Japanese?

This word appeared late in Japan. It seemed エロスcould only be read in academic writings. People have invented a hybrid adjective Eroi (エロい), denoting erotic. Ir became popular among civil.
Ero is short form of Eros (エロス).
Thus エロ can be noun and adjective.
Why were the Japanese soldiers in WW II so hesitant to surrender in battle?
